To provide seamless journey and last mile connectivity between the transit facilities, and to other services, Samarthyam revised the pedestrian guidelines and codes of the Indian Roads Congress with inclusive design standards for pedestrians and commuters.

Samarthyam is pioneering last mile connectivity by conducting walkability and road safety audits to make pedestrian environment inclusive and accessible.

We provide advice and undertake walkability and safety audits to ensure that streets and road infrastructure are safe and accessible for persons with disabilities and reduced mobility Our achievements include partnering and guiding the development authorities, urban local bodies, public works departments and municipal corporations who are in charge of streets and road networks.

Major Accomplishment:

  • Walkability Audits- conducted Accessibility and Safety Audits of University of Delhi North Campus, South Campus, Siri Fort road, Janpath- K G Marg to Tolstoy Marg, R M L Hospital road stretch, streetscape under renovation and all stadium complexes in Commonwealth games 2010 in Delhi
  • Samarthyam has compiled Guidelines on Universal Signage and Universal Design Toolkit. Several international and national documents and signage standards were referred to while compiling these guidelines and care has been taken to provide practical and cost-effective solutions to suit Indian street and roads requirements
  • WalkAbility and Mobility Audit of pedestrian and street infrastructure to achieve seamless journey with Public Works Department, Govt. of Delhi; IIT Delhi; Corporation of Chennai; Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation; BIT Mesra Jharkhand; IIT Kharagpur, and others
  • Policy advocacy and partnership with several Ministries of Government of India and amending existing standards, guidelines and policies.
  • Capacity building workshops for service providers, decision makers, stakeholders and professionals to raise awareness, sensitize and bring about sustainable change in the lives of people. So far trained more than 8500 engineers, architects, professionals and individuals in the country.
  • Accessibility Consultants with INGOs in Asia Pacific Region and worked with Government of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to make their road and building codes with accessibility standards • Co-authored IRC 103: 2012 Guidelines for pedestrian Facilities for Indian Roads Congress, the first ever national document with universal accessibility standards for pedestrian infrastructure.
  • Co-authored Street Design Guidelines, 2011, UTTIPEC, Delhi Development Authority that specifies accessibility elements for street amenities and design adopted currently to suit city wise
  • ‘Steer to Safety’ campaign for school children, 2013- ongoing, a campaign with UN agencies other child right groups to ensure road safety training and safe road behavior in school children 
  • ‘Let’s Walk’ Campaign – to promote Right to walk and make pedestrian spaces accessible and safe for all • Access audit of Delhi, Ahmadabad, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad Metro to make the systems reliable and friendly to all
