Know Your Rights – Right to Fly with Dignity and Safety

Samarthyam team’s active advocacy with Ministry of Civil Aviation has worked in making Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) inclusive.

For Government of India, Samarthyam has developed a Training Handbook for Airlines and Airport Authority of India to follow and provide accessible services and facilities to passengers with disabilities and reduced mobility.

Samarthyam has trained all the domestic airlines on disability etiquette, communication, passenger transfer and in flight safety and emergency handling of persons with disabilities.

Airlines trained are as follows:

Know Your Rights – Accessible Toilets

The Swacch Bharat Abhiyan and Accessible India Campaign mandate accessible public and household toilets for persons with disabilities. There is a critical need to increase understanding on the links between, functionality and maintenance, violence and WASH and promotion of universal access, which benefits persons with disabilities and the entire community.

Right to accessible toilets and know how to practitioners to incorporate access elements during planning, designing, and implementing of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services and facilities will foster accessible public toilets beside general loos. What should you look for:

Five star hotels- two accessible rooms with wheelchair accessible bathrooms

Tourist sites- one unisex accessible toilet with general toilet block

Community toilets- one bathroom and one toilet facility, accessible urinal, washbasin at low height

Schools, colleges, faculty departments, etc.- one accessible toilet with running water on every floor

Public and private buildings such as malls, markets, bus terminus, and railway station etc.- unisex accessible toilet on every floor with directional signage
